General Training Courses

Training programs are provided on a regular basis throughout the year. These courses are open to anyone to apply and provide networking opportunities across organisations and industries.

Here is a list of courses available for January to June 2010 with information on how to register.

 

Course Outlines

Equal Opportunity Law and Workplace Culture (Full day - 9:30am-4:30pm)

Who should attend:Any person interested in developing their knowledge of Equal
Opportunity Law; staff intending to undertake further training as Contact or Grievance
Officers, Managers, HR or Policy officers who are responsible for developing policies or
procedures for staff in relation to equal opportunity issues

Aim:To provide participants with an understanding of Equal Opportunity Law,
its application, measures to prevent unlawful discrimination and identify personal and organisational culture that supports equality of opportunity and diversity.

Content:Definitions of discrimination, substantive equality, victimisation, harassment
and bullying, culture and behaviour, individual and organisational roles and responsibilities, options to deal with inappropriate and potentially unlawful behaviour

Equal Opportunity Law and Grievance Management for Managers
(Full day 9:30am-4:30pm) (Please click here to register)

Who should attend: Managers and/or supervisors who want to improve their skills in dealing with discrimination and harassment in the workplace.

Aim: To provide Managers/Supervisors with skills and knowledge to identify and deal with discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace

Content: Legislation regarding discrimination, harassment and bullying and vicarious liability of individuals and organisations, the role of the Manager/Supervisor in fostering and monitoring a positive workplace culture through management of potentially unlawful workplace behaviour, grievance management framework and dealing with complaints.

Contact Officer Role (Full day - 9:30am-4:30pm)

Who should attend:Staff who are undertaking the role of Contact Officer in their organisation.

Prerequisite: Equal Opportunity Law and Workplace Culture

Aim: To provide particpants with the skills and knowledge to effectively perform the role of Contact Officer

Content: The role and function of a Contact Officer, the skills, knowledge and resources to act as a first point of contact in dealing with complaints

Contact Officer Refresher (Full day - 9:30am-4:30pm)

Who should attend:Those staff who have been previously trained
and are currently in the role of Contact Officer in their organisations

Prerequisite:  The role of Contact Officer (or equivalent)

Aim: To update knowledge, information and skills and discuss current
issues and challenges of the role and identify effective complaint
handling strategies

Content:Review of the Equal Opportunity Act, role and responsibilities
of the Contact Officer and challenges of the role, strategies for effective
complaint handling, revisit communication and interview skills, handling
difficult situations and practice scenarios

Grievance Officer Role and Complaint Handling (Two days - 9:30am-4:30pm)

Who should attend: Staff who have a role in their organisation in
grievance management and handling of complaints

Prerequisite:  Equal Opportunity Law and Workplace Culture

Aim: To provide Grievance Officers with the skills and knowledge
required to investigate and handle complaints of discrimination
and harassment in the workplace

Content:
Day one clarifies the role of Grievance Officers and Contact
Officers within organisations, required knowledge and skills, conflicts
of interest and interview skills with practice scenarios. Day two further
develops the skills of the Grievance Officer to include mediation and
the principles of investigation

Grievance Officer Refresher (Full day - 9:30am-4:30pm)

Who should attend: Those staff that have been previously trained as
Grievance Officers and are currenlty in the role of Grievance Officer in
their organisations.

Prerequisite:  Grievance Officer Training or equivalent.

Aim: To update knowledge, information and skills and discuss current
issues and challenges of the role and identify effectiving greivance
management strategies.

Content: Review of the Equal Opportunity Act and proposed changes,
the challenges in the role and responsibilites of the Grievance Officer
and effective strategies for effective complain handling. The Equal
Opportunity Commission's concilation process. Further development
of skills in interviewing, mediating and investigation.

Recruitment and Selection - Are you Getting it Right (half day - 9:30am-1:00pm)

Who should attend
: This course is suitable for people who may be involved in any aspect of the recruitment and selection of staff.  This course is suitable for people from the government sector, non-government organisations, private sector and employment agencies

Aim: This course aims to ensure organisations get the right person for the job by following best practice avoiding some of the common pitfalls and complying with Equal Opportunity Law

Content:The information and activities in this course will help participants to understand what is needed to develop good policies and systems to prevent discrimination and harassment from occurring in the workplace. All aspects of the recruitment process will be explored within the legislative framework.   Participants will review case studies that highlight the potential pitfalls and identify strategies that support inclusivity in recruitment processes.

Who should attend:Any person working in or on behalf of the public sector who is interested in developing their knowledge of Substantive Equality; including staff, Managers, HR practitioners, Policy officers or Consultants

Aim:To provide participants with an understanding of Substantive Equality, its intention, legal implications and the impact of unintended discriminatory policies and practice

Content:Definitions of discrimination, substantive equality; its meaning and application including individual and organisational roles and responsibilities. The session will also examine issues as they relate to substantive equality

Who should attend: Any person working within the community sector who is interested in developing their knowledge of Substantive Equality; including Managers, Policy officers, Advocates and interested members of the community (those to whom you provide a service). 

Aim:To provide participants with an understanding of Substantive Equality,
its intention, legal implications and the impact of unintended discriminatory policies and practices.

Content: Definitions of systemic discrimination and substantive equality, individual and organisational roles and responsibilities, including how the public service is addressing substantive equality and the role of the Substantive Equality Unit.

Parking and Wheelchair Access

The closest parking is available under 141 St George's Terrace. The entrance to the Wilson Car Park is off 38 Mounts Bay Road. Disabled parking bays are reserved at Wilson Car Park and are adjacent to the lifts which allow direct access to Level 2.

Cancellations

  • Cancellations received more than 7 working days prior to commencement of the course will be free of charge.
  • Cancellations received less than 7 working days prior to commencement of the course will be charged the full fee.
  • Cancellations should be provided in writing or by email to training@eoc.wa.gov.au

Substitution of another Particpant

  • Substitutions may be made at any time up to the commencement of the course by calling the Administration Officer, Community Education on 9216 3927 or email training@eoc.wa.gov.au.

No Shows

  • Enrollees who do not attend the class will be charged the full fee.
  • Enrollees who do not attend due to sickness may be transferred to another course upon receipt of a doctor's certificate.

Courses cancelled by the Equal Opportunity Commission

  • In the event a course is cancelled by the Equal Opportunity Commission all enrollees will be notified and be offered a place on the next available program.
